📙 Stage 3 of 3 · Case-Ending Drill

Fill in the Ending — الإِضَافَة

The second word in an Idafah — the mudhāf ilayh — is always genitive. That means it always ends in a kasrah ـِ. Complete each phrase below by choosing the right vowel.

📖 The Golden Rule of Case Endings
In every Idafah: the second word — the mudhāf ilayh — is always in the genitive case (majrūr). This is a fixed grammatical rule, not a coincidence. It never changes, no matter where the phrase sits in a sentence.

That means the last letter of the second word always carries a kasrah.

ـَ Fathah "a"
ـُ Dammah "u"
ـِ Kasrah "i"

→ The correct answer for every question in this Stage is the Kasrah ـِ.

Examples:

كِتَابُ اللَّهِ — "the Book of Allah" — the second word اللَّهِ ends in kasrah
رَسُولُ اللَّهِ — "the Messenger of Allah" — ends in kasrah
رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ — "the Lord of the Worlds" — the plural ending is ـِينَ, whose final vowel is a kasrah

💡 Why it matters when you recite: when you hear "Allāhi", "al-ʿĀlamīna", or "al-Qiyāmati", the "i" sound at the end is precisely this genitive kasrah. Now you know why the voice rises at the end of a possessive phrase in Qur'anic recitation.
