An amount of 100 is used as the cost of meal for one person to fast.
However, the amount given must be the cost of the food that the person who missed the fast usually has, and so will vary from person to person.

What is Fidyah?

Fidyah is paid in circumstances when it is difficult, or nearly impossible, for an individual to fast. Like for example:

  1. The person being of old age
  2. The person has to take medicines during the fast period
  3. The individual is permanently ill; physically or mentally

In these cases, the individual is liable to feed 1 person for every fast missed. For example, if an individual cannot fast for the entire month of Ramadan due to any of the reasons mentioned above, that individual must pay for 30 days' worth of food , or 29 days, according to the Islamic calendar, to someone in need. So, be in faith this Ramadan, and give your Fidyah to your family members in need.

What is Kaffarah?

Kaffara is paid as a penalty for leaving or breaking a fast intentionally. Kaffarah is applicable when the individual does any of the following deliberately, and knowingly:

  1. Eating or drinking while fasting
  2. Engaging in sexual activities anytime between dawn and dusk in the month of Ramadan
  3. Physically or verbally hurting someone, while fasting.

The penalty for breaking the fast is a payment, in addition to keeping fast at a later stage. If the fast cannot be kept, the individual is liable to feed 60 people for every fast missed or broken. For example, if a person breaks a fast during Ramadan due to any of the reasons mentioned above, and does not keep the fast at a later stage; the person is liable to pay for 60 days' worth of food .

Also, give Kaffarah to your closest relatives!

So, share the blessings of Ramadan with your family members even after the month of Ramadan has passed!

A Big Reward from Allah, Glorious Be He!
